Practice makes perfect
It always good to keep notes on the coffee you use, your setting and results to best track and improve your brewing experience, and it gives you a reference as to how your brewing journey is going. Take into considering the following:
A weak tasting coffee may require a lift in the coffee dosage.
On the flip side, a strong cup may require a deceased dosage of coffee.
Under-extraction (typically sour in taste) may require a finer grind setting
Over extracted coffee (often bitter and dry) may require you to go courser with your grind.
WHAT IS BATCH BREW
A batch brewer is a bench coffee maker that brews pour-over style filter coffee in larger quantities than you could on a single dose pour-over such as V60. Typically, this coffee is brewed into a thermal carafe which allows the brewer to keep the coffee warm for longer periods of time.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Batch brewer (such as a Moka Master, Breville Precision Brewer or the new Fellow Aiden)
Freshly roasted coffee (check out our range here)
Coffee grinder ( or you can use pre-ground if you like)
Filter paper (usually a cone shaped #4)
Filtered water
LET’S BREW
Prepare your paper filter
Fold the filter paper along the seams to help it fit nicely in the brewing basket. Typically this would be a size 4 filter paper. Place the paper filter into the filter basket. You can pre rinse you paper filter at this point if you feel this helps with the taste, though it isn’t necessary. If you do, however pre-rinse. Ensuring it is well drained before brewing would be ideal.
Weigh + Grind
60g coffee to 1L of water is a good starting point when finding your ideal recipe.
Coarsely grind (like table salt) out your pre-weighed coffee. Place coffee in the paper filter (which you have already to go in the basket) To level the bed of coffee inside the basket, give it a light shake or tap so the coffee is evenly distributed. Place the filter basket into the batch brewer ready for brewing.
Fill + Activate
Fill the water tank with you pre-weighed filtered water (remember the 60g to 1 litre ratio).
Hit the start button to ctivate your brewer. Then we wait!
When is it ready to drink?
Expected brew time: 5-7 minutes
Coffee is always best consumed at a temperature closer to your body temperature for maximum flavour. Make sure that the brew has been well stirred so the coffee tases uniform and complete.
